Don't Do It. If You Want More Opportunities to Get Paid; Get
Involved....![]()
Is creative spec work a scam or a rip-off? No. We strongly believe no designer should create anything on speculation if they don't want to. We did some digging around and it turns out no designer has ever been forced to do any work on speculation. Doing work on speculation is 100% voluntary and has the potential to be extremely rewarding. In early 2009 LG posted a massive creative design project on crowdSPRING worth $80,000.00 in total payouts. That's obviously worth a few hours of anyone's spare time.
People who are serious about No Spec! (they oppose doing creative work on speculation) have a valid gripe and we can identify with it. If a designer were to devote several days of hard work to a design project that ends up being rejected; it's a monumental waste of effort, talent and time.
The pivotal component is time. Almost all designers have spare time, free time, down time and time to experiment. When a designer devotes only a few hours of free time to a creative project; rejection is no big loss. On the bright side; when a designer devotes only a few hours of spare time to a project that gets accepted, they make good money from just a few hours of their time. Who doesn't have a little free time?
Time Spent Playing Games Or Working On Puzzles Can Be Put to Better Use
Drawing a line in the sand about spec work sets limits that can limit earning potential. Any opportunity to earn more money or increase income deserves serious thought and careful consideration. Looking at spec work with an open mind can open new doors and expand earning potential.
Fact: Spec Work Is Not a Scam.
When anyone puts a limit on what they will do, they set limits on what is possible. Limiting anyone's potential is like putting limits on their future. Good Web designer career skills shouldn't be wasted. Tens of thousands of savvy designers get involved and set aside spare time for doing design projects on speculation. The future is always brighter for those with the vision to see all of the possibilities.
